Mr. Lenox Shuman and members of the Liberty & Justice Party attended a ceremony to observe and commemorate the 181st anniversary of the  first arrival of 396 East Indian indentured workers on board the Whitby and Hesperus ships. They landed at Highbury, Berbice on May 5th 1838. This was the beginning of the indenture system which was abolished in 1917, by which time a total of some 240,000 indentured servants from India came to Guyana under a system whose essential features were very reminiscent of slavery. The ceremony was held at to the recently unveiled Indian Arrivals monument at Palmyra, East Bank Berbice. Go to the LJP YouTube channel to see the video. LIKE & SUBSCRIBE!
